The Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) has approved the appointment and elevation of 100 Principals and 96 Vice Principals in the State’s Post-Primary Teaching Service, through the Exit Replacement initiative.

The Chairman, Lagos State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Mrs. Elizabeth Olabisi Ariyo, said the exercise became imperative after the retirement of Principals and Vice Principals  in the last one year, noting that the last elevation and appointment of 433 Principals and Vice Principals was done in February 2020.

Delivering the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the induction programme, Mrs. Ariyo stated that successful officers were found eligible for the leadership position after going through the requisite screening comprising oral interview, essay writing and computer-based tests.

The TESCOM Boss noted that the Statewide induction themed, “Re-Imaging Leadership in the Management of Post-Primary School Education in Lagos State”, was necessary as a veritable avenue where deserving Officers were exposed to contemporary issues about the ever-increasing scope of School Administration and Management.

She stated that it was a process to equip, re-orientate and reinforce the capabilities of this calibre of policy drivers in Schools with emphasis on the ethos of administration and school management techniques of modern times.

“To support this refreshing policy, continuous education and capacity development of the workforce will be uppermost in the scheme of things and as such, this potpourri and fit-for-purpose training programme for these newly appointed and elevated School Heads and Administrators has become most necessary”, Mrs. Ariyo said.

The Chairman advised the inductees to see themselves as key change agents, who will be remembered for shaping future leaders, as she charged them to embrace new ideas and technology which have become inevitable tools for improving the quality of teaching and learning in our schools.

Her words: “To these few that have distinguished themselves and scaled the ‘’rigorous’’ hurdle during the processes of tests and assessments, I congratulate you and am quick to tell you that the result for hard work is more hard work.”

“A big task has been given to you and you have the responsibility to brace up to the challenge and prove your mettle to assure the State Government and indeed, Mr. Governor, that in truth, you are deserving of this elevation.”

Earlier in her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, Mrs. Toyin Olamide Machado-Onanuga, emphasised the importance of the induction as it provides an opportunity to integrate and equip newly appointed and elevated Principals and Vice Principals with the requisite leadership skills that will take them through their new career paths and, more importantly, make them more resourceful individuals so that they can contribute to the progress of education in the State.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the theme: Re-Imaging Leadership in the Management of Post-Primary School Education in Lagos State” addresses salient issues in the administration of the State’s Post Primary Schools and gives the new appointees a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities in the day to day running of the School System.

“The induction is to engender you to build a formidable and productive educational system that can favourably compete with any of its kind globally, more so, in view of the present global shift towards Electronic Business Management”, she said.

Mrs. Machado-Onanuga advised the inductees to employ the act of inclusive administration and team work, carrying along both staff and students, as well as showing empathy towards them for better performance to achieve the desired results in their respective domains.

“It will interest you to know that you cannot risk resting on your oars as there is still so much work to be done. The engagement of your staff and students, the show of concern for their wellbeing in and out of school, their social life and emotional stability; all these you must synchronise as Heads of  Schools for better performance and desired outcomes”, she advised.

She stressed that the only way to express gratitude to the State Government for such magnanimous gesture is to work assiduously and strive for excellence in performance by imbibing the tenets of best practices in order achieve the State’s Agenda of functional and productive education, leveraging on technology.

The Chairman, Basic Integrated Learning Consults, Mr. Adebola Badru, in his opening remarks opined that the event signposts a significant milestone as it institutes a sustainable support system that builds capacity of teachers, particularly those assuming leadership positions. 

“There is no better way to start their elevation to the enviable roles of Principals and Vice Principals”, he enthused. 

He admonished the appointees to make positive impact, initiate strategic improvements by leveraging on the organised learning intervention to assist the education sector as they approach the pinnacle of their careers.

“The objective of the programme is not just to help you develop the right leadership skills, but also to improve your ability to influence change and inspire confidence in your respective teams. More importantly, it is to trigger in you the necessary mindset shift to adjust to a changing environment and so, with an open mind, here is a golden opportunity for you to learn, unlearn and re- learn”, Badru said.
